Photoelastic modulator
The optical elastic modulator is used to change the polarization state of light.
The photoelastic modulator is used to change the polarization state of light. (Transmitted light undergoes dynamic phase delay.) The light-passing part of the modulator is made of isotropic material (which does not depend on direction for its properties or distribution). Isotropic materials vibrate periodically at their inherent resonant frequency. The refractive index of optical materials changes periodically due to the photoelastic effect. Depending on the operating mode, photoelastic modulators can be categorized into two types: (one-dimensional, two-dimensional) 1: One-dimensional photoelastic modulators have only one vibration plane and are used in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelength ranges. 2: Two-dimensional photoelastic modulators have two vibration planes and are used for larger phase modulation. They are mainly used in the visible and infrared wavelength ranges.
